Second Quarter 2022 Financial Results
$MM (except shipments and per share data) Q1 2022 Q2 2022 Shipments (tonnes) 211,411 214,084 Net sales $ 753.6 $ 856.6 Net income $ 17.7 $ 37.4 Diluted earnings per share $ 0.18 $ 0.36 Adjusted net income(1) $ 60.7 $ 30.4 Adjusted earnings per share(1) $ 0.59 $ 0.30 Adjusted EBITDA(1) $ 105.5 $ 86.6 Notes:
(1) Non-GAAP measure; see reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP financial measures.Shipments of primary aluminum for the quarter ended June 30, 2022 increased 1 percent sequentially, driven primarily by increased volumes at Mt. Holly. Net sales for the second quarter of 2022 increased by 14 percent sequentially due to higher realized aluminum prices.
Century reported net income of $37.4 million for the second quarter of 2022, a $19.7 increase sequentially. Second quarter results were negatively impacted by $7.4 million of net exceptional items, in particular $159.4 million asset impairment charge and $8.2 million in curtailment costs related to the Hawesville plant, $52.8 million lower of cost or net realizable value adjustment, offset by $221.8 million of unrealized gains on derivative instruments and a $6.0 million reduction in share-based compensation costs. Thus, Century reported an adjusted net income of $30.4 million for the second quarter of 2022, a $30.3 decrease sequentially.
Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter of 2022 was $86.6 million. This was a decrease of $18.9 million from the prior quarter primarily driven by higher energy and raw material costs, partially offset by higher LME and regional premiums.
Century's liquidity position at quarter end was $225.6 million, an increase of $71.3 million from the prior quarter.
“We are proud of the Century team for delivering these second-quarter results in an increasingly complex environment," commented President and Chief Executive Officer Jesse Gary.
"Global energy prices have continued to rise over the past several months, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, decreased Russian natural gas flows to Europe and unfavorable weather conditions," continued Mr. Gary. "In this environment, we have taken actions necessary to preserve the competitiveness of our businesses, including the difficult decision to temporarily curtail operations at our Hawesville smelter and other measures designed to improve cash flow while global energy prices remain elevated. As we look forward, we continue to position Century to benefit from long-term trends towards value-added aluminum products through our Grundartangi casthouse and North America casthouse debottlenecking projects."

Non-GAAP Financial Measures
Adjusted net income (loss), adjusted earnings (loss) per share and adjusted EBITDA are non-GAAP financial measures that management uses to evaluate Century's financial performance. These non-GAAP financial measures facilitate comparisons of this period’s results with prior periods on a consistent basis by excluding items that management does not believe are indicative of Century’s ongoing operating performance and ability to generate cash. Management believes these non-GAAP financial measures enhance an overall understanding of Century’s performance and our investors’ ability to review Century’s business from the same perspective as management. The tables below, under the heading "Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures," provide a reconciliation of each non-GAAP financial measure to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure. Non-GAAP financial measures should be viewed in addition to, and not as an alternative for, Century's reported results prepared in accordance with GAAP. In addition, because not all companies use identical calculations, adjusted net income (loss), adjusted earnings (loss) per share and adjusted EBITDA included in this press release may not be comparable to similarly titled measures of other companies. Investors are encouraged to review the reconciliations in conjunction with the presentation of these non-GAAP financial measures.
